Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Selen Demir and I am a second-year Computer Engineering Student at Antalya Science University, Antalya. My current focuses is Frise, school and my website selendemir.net.
Where did it all start?
Actually, it all started the year I entered college. I opened my own website and YouTube channel. I worked as an organiser in the Google Developer Group and Women Tech Makers for 1 year. I worked as a volunteer in a software company in the summer of 2018. Then everything followed each other. I was selected for the entrepreneurship foundation fellow program. I’m one of the selected 40 people out of 112 thousand people in 2018. And since the beginning of 2019, we started to write our little baby Frise mobile app.
What does your day to day normally involve?
My normal day involves some work, a lot reading about management. Mostly school work and study for my lessons.
Is there someone that encouraged you to do this?
Actually, everybody said I couldn’t do it but I’m trying my best to do more and achieve much more in every year. But my boyfriend has always supported me to be a better version of myself every day and trusts everything I’m trying to do.
What motivates you/what do you find motivating?
My dreams and my purpose of success motivates me. I want to encourage everyone to be successful in tech: to influence people to study more and achieve their dreams. In the tech field, sometimes you feel alone or demotivated about work. I want to break this and that keeps me motivated all the time. So keep up the good works sisters!
What advice do you have for others studying?
Just think about you want to achieve in life and trust yourself to achieve it. In this game called life, only you can save yourself. Don’t trust anybody to save you. Just think about that when you don’t want to study. Keep everything for your classes organised and use a journal: it will save you a lot of time. Schedule everything about school, life anything in it. You’re pretty enough, you’re smart enough: love yourself and just focus on proving yourself to yourself.
If you could go back in time, what is the one piece of advice you would give to yourself? (hindsight is a wonderful thing!)
A few things I want to say to myself: when you’re in high school learn to code. You must read more books and take more online courses. Learn at least German and Chinese!
How do you manage the stress (if any) of studying and co-founding an app? Do you have any self-care methods you enjoy?
Every time I try to manage stress, I fail. My life currently has so much stress. Sometimes I like to unplug everything and write about my feelings with candles and tea. I meditate and I pray and I hug my loved ones tightly.
What is your favourite thing about your job/study? What excites you most?
I really love that nothing is permanent and everything is always changing in the tech industry. I love science and math. I love to use my brain as much as possible. The uncertainty about the future excites me the most.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy writing, dancing and long walks near the sea. I love to travel and trying new things. I love listening to good music and watch some good tv shows. I enjoy reading and learning new things!
What’s your favourite color?
I love every colour but my favourites are baby blue and baby pink
What is your favourite film just now and why?
Intern movie is amazing: gives us a valuable lesson. I highly recommended you all go to see it!
If you could be anyone for a day, who would it be and why? (from any time period!)
I want to be an Ada Lovelace. She is a true inspiration for all of us today. She gives us hope and she is actually really cool. For anyone who doesn’t know anything about her, in short she is a gifted mathematician. Ada Lovelace is considered to have written instructions for the first computer program in the mid-1800s.
